the case for simplicity

I don't know about you, but my Instagram feed is a blend of wellness influencers, biohackers, curious history accounts, and anatomy lessons. So, naturally, I'm constantly bombarded with the latest trends in nervous system regulation, health optimization, supplements, and more. A client recently asked what I personally do to regulate my own nervous system. My answer surprised even me! Although I'm fortunate to receive various wellness tools, supplements, and health-optimizing gadgets, when I genuinely reflect on what keeps me grounded, it boils down to a few key principles which are not items or biohacks:

Movement: Time and time again throughout my life I have experienced the benefits of movement. At times in my past, I sought really intense movement, but in more recent years, the aim is to stimulate my system, invigorate my lungs, enliven my circulation, and just feel good. Taking a class is a special treat, but if not that, I love a walk with my family after dinner, or time to just close my eyes and let my body do what it wants. Motion is lotion.

Healthy boundaries: are an ongoing project for me. As a fire-element type, I tend to prioritize the approval of others over my own needs. Therefore, I'm constantly refining what type of schedule allows me to be present with my loved ones, and identifying the settings where I can meaningfully connect with others. I am working on mastering the "enlightened No" and becoming comfortable with the possibility of disappointing someone. After all, as long as my intentions are clear and I act with integrity, that's all I can do. Also, I put limits on my phone time, which is incredibly effective. That is always a work in progress too.

Simplicity: Committing to a second-hand closet was a transformative first step—it paused my impulse buying and made me appreciate what I already have. I'm also focused on energetic simplicity: How often do do I respond to unnecessary expectations throughout my day? As an entrepreneur, partner, and mother, I've realized that many pressures I feel are rooted in old conditioning. Taking time to connect with my values provides me with a solid perspective that makes its easier to release the expectations that are a product of my conditioning and feel more aligned with my authentic self.

When I move my body, maintain healthy boundaries, and focus on simplicity, it almost always leads to being more present. Being present allows me to receive the love and beauty in my life, helping me feel settled and at peace. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the resonance of the Metal element invites us to consider what we truly need and what we can let go of. Just as nature simplifies in order to conserve its energy for winter, we can simplify our lives to focus on what truly matters to us. What do you believe is key to your regulation?
